Cold wax medium and oil painting is a mixed media technique that combines two materials to create a unique matte and textured surface. This technique allows for layering, scraping, and revealing previous layers, fostering a rich history within the artwork. We will cover all the basic techniques to include mark-making for structure and expression, color mixing, substrate preparation, tools and paint applications. We will also discuss the advantages of Intuitive painting as it offers the opportunity to explore and experiment making things up as you go along, and the acceptance that in the process everything can change, that ideas, marks and colors are fluid.

Recommended reading for this class is The Artist’s Journey by Nancy Hillis, where she covers in detail  simplicity and constraint.

    Cost: $295.00 Tax, materials included

    4 Participants Max./ class

If class is taken in conjunction with the advanced weekend retreat workshop, cost is $150.00

3-day Encaustic Retreat, All Levels Welcome
    Whidbey Island, Washington

    Friday - Sunday, July 11 – 13, 2025
    Pacific Northwest Art School

Creating with encaustic is a dream come true for painters who also enjoy adding dimension and texture to their work. The beeswax-based paint comes in luscious colors that you can use to easily add depth and texture to your paintings.

Encaustic is one of the most forgiving mediums available, allowing you to "undo" virtually anything, giving you the freedom to be fearless and let your creativity flow. No painting or drawing experience is necessary for this class; just an adventurous spirit!

We’ll combine several mediums within layers of richly colored wax paint, including watercolor, professional artist crayons, fabric, fiber, and oil/pigment sticks to build up depth and texture.

    >> Register here. All supplies included except panels.

Don't worry if you haven't tried anything like this before. I'll have lots of tools and materials available for you to play with, and you can work in any style you choose.
