Creating Color Effects with Encaustic at the Woodstock School of Art August 18-21 2026

18 Aug 2026 9:00 AM | Leslie Giuliani

Join teaching artist Leslie Giuliani and R&F Handmade Paints Founder Richard Frumess for this 4-Day encaustic color intensive. If you are new to  Encaustic, this is great way to start!

How encaustic affects the color of pigment differs greatly from how oil or acrylic or tempera affect the color. That difference is reflected in encaustic’s unique methods of how the paint is applied, how it is fused, layered, extended out, textured, and how it incorporates other materials.

This is an unusual approach to both encaustic painting technique and color theory. Emphasis is placed largely on understanding how encaustic employs the often-under-recognized power of a pigment’s translucency or opacity. The understanding of the opacity/translucency spectrum not only helps to resolve problems but also enriches the toolbox of expressive possibilities.

Presentations and examples will be shown illustrating how encaustic’s unique materiality affects the way color works in the medium. Artists will create works using techniques that intrigue them with a deeper understanding of how they can make encaustic work for them and to choose color with intentionality.

Students will gain:
A comprehensive understanding of the optical effects of color in the medium of beeswax-based encaustic paint.

Suitable for all levels, no experience necessary! Ages 16+
