Participants will explore the intensely rewarding experience of working three dimensionally using traditional sculpture processes combined with encaustic painting. The focus of this workshop will be to create lightweight armatures using polystyrene foam, foam board, wire, natural and found objects with a variety of skins compatible to wax surface treatments.  Students will see demonstrations in all processes and be able to select those that best fit a chosen concept to explore. There will be information and discussion about 3-D design and sculptural engineering as well as mixed media encaustic processes and materials. Participants can expect to take home several sample forms or one completed sculpture.

    OCTOBER 28-30, 2016

We think alike, and yet, very differently.

This will be the third workshop that Shawna and Ellen have taught together. Within the different approaches to each of their paintings, there is a bond between them, and some basic principles and approaches to the work, and to the life of an artist, that they share.

Each of these workshops has been very successful, a great experience for students as well as teachers. And each has filled quickly.

following the IEA/EAI retreat:  THREE DAYS: OCT 3-5

This workshop is suitable for artists with some experience, whether in encaustic or other media, ready to think about the possibility of exhibiting their work, or who already are, but want to increase their exposure. Or those who simply want to further develop a body of work with that direction in mind.  Previous encaustic experience is not required.

The three day workshop will combine the expertise of a mature artist both with hands on demos and ample time for students to work, as well as portfolio reviews for individual participants, and advice related to professional development. I will share techniques and work one on one with each student either in creative coaching, a professional development session or a portfolio review. It is open to artists at all levels.

ELLEN KOMENT is the recipient of the LaVendeene award for excellence in Encaustic Education, holds an MFA from the Cooper Union Art School in NYC, and an MA in painting from UC Berkeley. She has been teaching and exhibiting encaustic painting for twenty years.

A study in Visual depth and Textures, and reflections on some aspects of our Spain workshops, and New Mexico culture.

Belen Millan and I have conducted two amazing workshops in Malaga, Spain. I am so delighted that Belen has agreed to join me for a workshop in Santa Fe this summer. I have come to realize and respect the depth and breadth of her work and of her teaching. In respect to our joint ventures in Spain, we have added a couple of new components to our workshop here in Santa Fe.

The workshop will cover a broad range of techniques on paper and panel to create visual depth, texture and patterned effects, including glazing, mark making, incorporation of the photo, use of additional materials such as watercolor, ink, pigments, oil bars and pan pastels, creating stencils, monotypes, small pours, and much more. Each of the artists will do demos and work individually with the participants.

In addition, we have scheduled it just before Indian Market, so that we can participate in some of the many shows and events that happen at that time.

    Five Days: JULY 11-15, 2016

Take a whole week to expand your painting horizons. This will be an opportunity to work at a larger scale, and to enhance your work with a variety of new techniques. Individual instruction and criticism will help you move your encaustic painting to a new level.

For people with encaustic experience it will be an opportunity to take your into a new dimension. Many people stay at a certain level with their encaustic painting because they see working at a larger scale, or changing their approach, as intimidating. It does present certain challenges, but when you understand how to overcome them, it can be a richly rewarding experience.

This workshop will allow you to work up to 24" x 24". It will address all aspects of working larger, from the planning and drawing stages, through preparation of the surface; understanding temperature control and how it facilitates working larger, handling color and glazing, as well as special effects, and finishing. A number of new techniques will be presented: use of dry pigment and oil paint on incised line, mixed media approaches, basic color and glaze theory, creating texture and working with photo and other media.

ELLEN KOMENT is the winner of the IEA LaVendeene award for excellence in Encaustic Education. She holds a BFA from the Cooper Union Art School in NYC, and an MA in painting from UC Berkeley. She has been teaching encaustic, painting and drawing for twenty years.
