Ursuline Campus

Southwest School of Art (San Antonio, Texas) is the premier art school in the Southwest. Sitting at the bank of the San Antonio River and founded from the original Ursuline Convent, SSA is located in the heart of downtown, walking distance from the historic Alamo and the San Antonio Museum of Art.  Come for the class.  Stay for a vacation!

Class Description:  This three day workshop is designed to prepare the student with everything needed to begin an independent exploration of this fascinating medium.  Students will receive a thorough grounding in the basics of encaustic through demonstrations, hands on materials and extensive handouts. We will address safe studio practices, tools and equipment, and basic approaches to wax painting. Students will explore a variety of media and techniques for adding a mark-making language to their work. Time will be spent in discussing correct storage of encaustic work along with packaging and shipping.  Students can expect to take home several small completed paintings.

Co-sponsored by R&F Paint as part of the CORE program, students will work at individual stations, receive paint, medium and pigment sticks for class use and take home. This class is open to all levels.

Michelle Belto is a full-time studio artist and international instructor.  Her signature work is encaustic and oil on custom handmade paper canvases.  Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and most recently in Sydney, Australia.
