Rodney Thompson

Rodney Thompson is an encaustic artist that lives in rural northern California where he cultivates a peaceful, balanced and creative life. For Rodney, formal art making is simply one aspect of a spectrum of living creatively. It is, for him however, the purest form of creative expression.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Creativity to me is a practice of seeing and thinking in new ways, of learning to appreciate beauty inherent in the often overlooked or taken for granted. The more we learn to see beauty all around us, the more beautiful our lives become.

My art is an expression of peaceful simplicity. I work with divisions of space, often loosely based on grids or geometric shapes, but with an influence of an organic nature. Encaustic lends itself well to my needs. Through layering of materials and marks I can maintain a simple division of the space while creating a richness of texture and colors through the depth inherent in the waxy translucency. Much of my imagery evokes a sense of openness, vast landscapes or minimalist interiors, which suggest spaciousness and unrestrained possibilities. Other work utilizes repetition as a meditative device, both in the creative process and in the viewing. I work with warm earthy colors that, combined with simplicity of design, evoke a sense of calm and tranquility.
