ARTIST STATEMENT

My approach to art-making is rooted in curiosity and alchemy. I like to test materials in new ways, letting them work their magic with a minimum of interference - mixing paint, chalk, photographic film, cheesecloth, wax, the objects that surround me in my rural home - in order to make a visual statement about the process of living. Experimentation often leaves a lot of detritus and only a little "product", but is evidence of the messiness of trying to figure things out as I muddle along in art-making and in life. Illusion is not my goal, but rather an honest revealing of the process and the beauty of the materials. It is the transient nature of being alive and a sense that authentic engagement in life is tied to the ongoing effort to pull order and beauty out of chaos - these are the ideas that drive my art-making today.
