IEA Member Artist Profile
Paula Roland
To Paula Roland, the hidden or unknown is more intriguing than the obvious. Her works examines the nature of
how we see and our perception of reality. Paula is intrigued with the uncertainties, mysteries and paradoxes
found in nature and in nature’s collision with culture. Paula aims to mine the order that lies in this
uncertainty, the "negative capability," as Keats called it, or "the ability to be in uncertainties, mysteries,
doubts." Paula uses materials and processes that incorporate the effects of gravity, heat, chemical action
and chance. Spontaneity leads to improvisation, and the discovery of hidden truths and new ideas.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Fragments Series, 2006
These works find intersect between the urban and natural landscape and a crossing of memory, time, and place.
The pieces are inspired by my former home, New Orleans. In recent visits, I collected graphite rubbings from
manhole covers, weathered wood, downed trees, and architectural design elements and sealed them in "protective"
wax. By "touching" these objects (while making the rubbings) and using opaque and translucent surfaces, lush
texture, and aromatic beeswax, I lead the viewer to a sensory experience that stirs feeling and memory.
Energy Fields Series, 2007
This body of work relates to unstable systems in social structure and in nature. An abstract narrative unfolds
in the act of making each piece. The language of repetitive mark-making is a record of experience or attitudes.
These systems flow, disperse, gather, interact, and personify social interactions. Within their storied space,
they suggest journeys, populations of species, climates, and interactions between humans and the natural world.
