ARTIST STATEMENT

I began my journey of creativity as a modern dancer from the age of 5. In college, I continued to dance & became a master at collage & assemblage, while beginning my love affair with photography & all things visual. In my life as a San Francisco Firefighter, my art took an enormous leap after 9/11, concurrent with my father's passing & my own on-duty injury recovery. I dove in deeper to my creative self.

Combining color with texture directs the body of my work. My artistic process usually begins when I see an image, have an idea ... or, simply lay down an initial section of color. This alone often sets the tone for a particular piece. I use any textured material I can get my hands on - from ash, salt & roofing compound to tissue paper, netting, leaves & feathers to photos of images from my long walks in the country.

I have fallen in love with wax & how it moves on the canvas I have created. Mostly though, my art evolves as I continue to let go, shed my personality & allow myself to go deeper into the stillness as I get lost in the 'process.' Being in a place of risk ... in life, work or art ... helps me develop the acceptance of what comes without judgment.
