ARTIST STATEMENT

I have been working for about eight years in wax, leaves and other natural elements in a repeated format, In using these elements, I consider issues of fragility and impermanence, decay and perservation, covering and uncovering. These leaves imbedded, stenciled, carved and glazed in waxes suggest the process of memory, the valuing of nature. They convey healing in their fragile beauty, conserved now and for the future. In 2001, I began to consider elements and soil -- deposits of sediment, fine granules and inorganic matter that are shaped by natures processes into the earth we live on. I have used graphite, red brick clay granules, ashes, and asphalt as elements. They have been suspended in denatured alcohol, water, and citrus solvent in varying intensities. These solutions are applied and allowed to dry. Intense heat and light create patterns of melting and flow. The granules respond according to laws of flow and geology, to fluid mechanics in their distribution. I think of the world, of the nature surrounding us, continuing on, bringing comfort and healing.
