ARTIST STATEMENT
Art heals, nurtures, soothes, inspires, and teaches. Art in many forms connects us with others, brings a smile to our face or brings us to tears.
Art communicates what we canąt say verbally. Art may bring us to meditate, to pray, to remember and honor.
I have seen this in the doing of my own artwork and in observing others in the process of their making artwork in my studio. I truly believe that
art is universal in its intervention for healing the spirit, as I saw so vividly in my work as a clinical chaplain, and in the healing of my own
grief. Sharing my artwork through gallery shows and exhibits, and mentoring others through workshops is an exciting part of the creative process
for me.
I love the look of layering that mixed media collage art brings. Images that I care about, memories, textures, meaningful words, symbols and
photographs come together as a joyful surprise. The process is much like a puzzle needing to be arranged so that there is meaning to me, and
hopefully to others.
Encaustic painting has brought another dimension to my work where the layering of wax and pigment gives depth with an illuminating quality.
Through this medium there are many possibilities for adding more and more texture through carving and the transfer of images.
