IEA Member Artist Profile
Jimmie Beardsley
A North Carolina native, Jimmie’s art is informed by her Southern origins. She took her first formal
training in Germany where she learned oil painting and portraiture. Coming to the Bay Area in the mid
1970’s, Jimmie continued to study painting and drawing using oil, pastels, charcoal, acrylics and
watercolor. Wanting to explore more tactile media, she began working with printmaking, etching, weaving
and fabrics and soon found acclaim as an instructor in textile design, bumaki and Shibori at the Rudolph
Schaeffer School. Promoted to Dean of Students, Jimmie learned the business side of the arts and founded
a decorative painting company in the Bay Area serving an elite clientele. After sixteen years of producing
fine finishes, mural work and trompe l’oeil painting, Jimmie closed the doors to focus on her personal art
and still paints daily.
ARTIST STATEMENT
"Artist" is a difficult title for me to accept. Art is what I do, where I’ve been, what I have to do, and
what I love to do. Art is how I order my thoughts and is my way of communicating with the world – a place to
share my soul and my joy. My most recent love is encaustic. I am fascinated by the translucency, texture,
rich color and reflective surface of wax. I think I will always continue to study, explore, and work with
art as a way to voice and understand spirit; both for myself and for those chancing across my work.
