IEA Member Artist Profile
Jhina Alvarado
Jhina Alvarado is a native Californian and has lived in San Francisco for the past 14 years. She started drawing
and painting at a very young age but has had no formal training as an artist, feeling that there were other
interests she wanted to explore in college. She enjoys using a variety of different mediums when painting, although
her predominant mediums are acrylics or encaustics. She is currently working as a middle school algebra and geometry
teacher while also learning how to play the cello. She paints using as a way to escape the stresses of everyday life
and to avoid grading papers.
ARTIST STATEMENT
When I paint, I often chose symbols that are both personal and universal in their significance, echoing my belief
that the audience brings as much to a painting as the artist. I will usually use the symbol or object in many of my
pieces, exploring all possible meanings with it, and then abandoning the symbol for something new, only to repeat the
process. Many times, numbers are also included in my paintings to reflect my need to categorize things and my obsession
with counting objects. This need of order reflects my anxiety towards chaos and the need to put everything, including
emotions, in their proper place. Patterns and repetition are also prevalent in my paintings, adding a sense of security
in rhythm and the redundancy of said objects in my work.
