IEA Member Artist Profile
Janet Hickok
Janet Hickok moved full time to Anchorage in 2005. Her most recent passion is encaustic painting. Since first encountering the media two and a half years ago,
the intensity, subtlety, complexity, luminosity – the very feel and smell of warm beeswax has enticed her and kept her captivated.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Encaustics, the use of molten wax intrigues and fascinates me with its spectrum of colors, ability to take on a myriad of textures, forms, and patterns,
and its capacity to be transformed endlessly. I work spontaneously and intuitively, but tend to have definite images in mind, and keep a sketch book close
in the painting process. My current encaustic pieces are primarily visions or flashes of imagery that come to me at all hours. The pieces are about
encountering and learning something new, trying new techniques, new approaches, new subjects, new colors, anything that helps transform warm bees wax into art,
creating an exciting adventure for myself and the viewer.
