ARTIST STATEMENT
I paint emotional landscapes which address issues of memory, psychological aspects of being, and life. I strive to combine an
interest in anatomy, bones, and a love of nature. My methodology has evolved over years from organic sculptural forms created
with fiber and waxed linen to my current pieces which connect memories and experiences of the past with my present life.
The work is abstract in nature.
As I work I explore a private terrain within my mind. The building up and reducing of the wax surface mimics the emergence and
veiling of memory, intertwining tension and calm. Unification in the materials and forms create cohesion in my work. To me,
my painting speaks of time, life and nature. I see it as an archeological dig.
The history of encaustic is important to me, as I work to translate this ancient medium of encaustic into a more contemporary
form. Using the transparency and translucent density of wax, occasionally embedding mementos or symbolic objects, sometimes
hiding layers of drawing or graphite lines and arranged abrasions, I have found a language that holds my fascination and perfectly
suits the balance I am seeking between memory and moment.
