President's Message for February
by Gail Steinberg
......................................................................

“Art is Art. Everything else is everything else.”
- Ad Reinhardt (American abstract painter)

Happy February. It’s the progress, the planning, the metamorphosis in IEA I want to share this month. Quickly, in bite-size chunks, here are some highlights of what’s in the works. Your suggestions, comments and questions are solicited. All doors are open. As an owner of this organization, you are invited, urged, requested to include yourself in. Please call me (415-897-5276), email (gail.steinberg@comcast.net) or leave feedback on our yahoo list. Your voice is our art.

A new IEA identity package: Daniella Woolf arranged for Julia Pinsky, professional graphic designer from Acme Creative and new member of IEA, to create a super zoomy new logo with all accompanying branding elements to match our new name. The board selected our favorite from the first versions presented and Julia is currently developing it. Hopefully our new look will be ready very soon and our first organizational brochure will be ready by spring.

A new board structure: There are now three units of the board
  1. The executive team which meets weekly is composed of Kathy Knebel (treasurer), Cari Hernandez (secretary), Sandi Miot (Vice President), Eileen Goldenberg (Parliamenterian) and me. We are responsible for moving the approved goals of the organization forward and in the past month have completed the first stage of the 501C3 process (Our application is now filed with the state of CA and we are waiting for approval), developed the 2007 budget, contacted members to verify volunteer commitments, approved plans for the retreat, the Debbie Dicker workshop, and 2007 IEA exhibitions.

  2. The working board which meets every other month is composed of Cyndy Goldman, Hylla Evans, Hannah Mott and the executive team. The working board is responsible for considering and approving proposals, appointment of board members, and serving as liaison persons to team leaders in order to enhance communication and accountability.

  3. Team leaders meet as a group twice yearly and are responsible for working with their team members to accomplish our programs. Laura Kleinman and Lauryn Taylor are co-directors of exhibitons, Jimmie Beardsley is director of membership, Helen Steele and Lissa Rankin are co-directors of education, Cathy Valentine is director of state chapters, Kathleen McMahon is web director, Eileen Goldenberg is PR director, Cyndy Goldman is administrative director. Open positions are Industrial Relations Director, Fundraising Director, International Relations Director and Volunteer Director.

Calendar Hylla Evans has taken responsibility for calendaring all general and working board meetings. The next general meeting is Feb. 10th at 2pm at Tina Vietmeir’s studio in San Francisco. Please watch this list for full details.

2007 Retreat: Our member’s only retreat is scheduled for April 27-29 at Hidden Valley Ranch in Carmel, CA. Save the date. Cari Hernandez and Helen Steele are co-chairing and have already made amazing plans for this event which they will be ready to announce in the next few weeks. Last years retreat was extraordinary: friendships were made, skills were advanced… we all came away with the sense that we had been with our right family, with each other we felt normal. With three days instead of two, this year’s time together will be that much better. These retreats really are lifechanging events. I can never get enough of time spent growing like this with other wax addicts--- I know for sure that I am not alone.

Debbie Dicker Workshops: Watch your email for info. about this upcoming workshop series focused on mixed media, round robin, sculpture and altered book techniques.

Exhibitions: A member’s only juried show is scheduled for April 27-June 15 at the Todd Elliott Gallery in Carmel. Watch this list for submission guidelines. Planning is now underway for a juried members show in NY, a juried members show in San Francisco, and a members show with guaranteed participation offered to all members at a location to be announced. Watch for upcoming submission guidelines.

2nd Annual IEA Benefit Auction: Plans are underway for our next auction which will include internet biddng. Full information will be posted soon.

Yahoo List: As you know Paula Fava has been tireless in making it possible for us to communicate through this yahoo list, no easy task. Our hope is that all announcements will be made through this list and that member to member communication will be encouraged by the ability to ask questions anyone can answer, talk about techniques, resources and show opportunities or anything else you want to talk about. Please use it. It belongs to you.

International Development: We are beginning work to increase IEA’s national and international presence. Hylla Evans is developing outreach plans for new members including identifying easy ways for current members to make referrals to IEA. Margaret Berry has created a terrific guide for starting new chapters that will be distributed to state chapter team members who hope to start groups outside of California. I will be speaking at the national encaustic conference in Massachusetts as will Hylla Evans and many IEA members are planning to submit workshop proposals and attend.

The Domino Project: Wayne Berger has the group of finished dominoes and is eager to create an exhibition schedule for them. If you know of a venue which might like to show this amazing set of encaustic dominoes, each designed by a different IEA artist, please post your suggestions.

Fundraising: A proposal has been approved to develop items to sell on our website. Items under consideration include “how to” pamphlets detailing different encaustic techniques, canvas bags, books of postcards, books, canvas bags and t-shirts. IEA will also become an Amazon associate site, earning a percentage for all books on art sold to our members. I’m wondering if you all would also consider using US approved IEA 39 cent postage stamps on your outgoing mail if we created them?

2007 is starting out great. Please let us hear from you and remember:

“When a man is singing and cannot lift his voice
and another comes and sings with him,
another who can lift his voice,
the first will be able to lift his voice too.
This is the secret of the bond between spirits.”
